Beach cleanup launches reef conservation effort
If you found Sandy and Makapuu Beaches cleaner than usual this weekend, you have the folks at Hanahauoli School, Diamond Bakery and Education Works to thank for it.
A group of 100 volunteers gathered Saturday (Sept. 12) to clean the popular parks as part of Diamond Bakery's SAVING KIMO reef preservation effort. The public awareness campaign is a partnership with the Waikiki Aquarium and Education Works.
The sixth graders of Hanahauoli School in Makiki joined the effort as an educational and fund-raising effort.
Thus, both the environment and education benefited from Saturday's cleanup. Bag after bag of litter, debris, trash, discarded automobile parts, and even furniture ended up in City's collection containers.
"This is one of the lessons we can all learn," Brent Kunimoto, CEO of Diamond Bakery told volunteers. "Threats to coral reef ecosystems are numerous, starting with negligent human activity on land. By doing our part to clean up the shorelines we assure ourselves of a more pristine ocean."
In addition to the school outreach and beach clean-up, Diamond Bakery has made a donation of $1,500 to Waikiki Aquarium's educational tour program. The Aquarium hosts over 25,000 school children a year.

Insta-Snow is an amazing powder that mixes with water into a white fluffy fake snow that looks just like the real thing.
Insta-snow is sodium polyacrylate, a water-absorbent polymer used in detergent and diapers. Insta-snow could be used for science lessons, especially chemistry and the chemistry of polymers. For instance, add regular table salt to see the snow "melt."
The water will evaporate within a few days, returning the insta-snow to its original powdered form which can be reused.
